Another storm threatens to dampen the country after last week's heavy rains caused by severe tropical storm Florita, the state weather bureau said Thursday.

The new storm, with the international name Maria, was tracked
2,210 kilometers east of Visayas at 10 a.m., packing top sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and 90 kph gusts, said PAGASA forecaster Ezra Bulquerin.

Maria is expected to reach the northwest boundary of the Philippine area on Sunday or Monday. It is unlikely to hit land, but will enhance the habagat or southwest monsoon, which will dump rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas, he told radio DZMM.

For now, the habagat's occasional heavy rains may trigger floods and landslides in Palawan, Mindoro and Western Visayas, said PAGASA.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country face the same threat due to localized thunderstorms, the weather agency added.
