MANILA — The slain vice mayor of Trece Martires City in Cavite was laid to rest Sunday, a week after he was ambushed by still unidentified assailants. 

During the final hours of Trece Martires Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan's wake, dozens of his supporters came to the slain officials' residence to pay their last respects.

The residents were wearing white shirts, and they also tied black ribbons on their arms as they prayed for justice following the killing of the 44-year-old local official.

Death not in vain: Wife of slain Cavite town vice mayor seeks justice

Cavite Vice Governor Jolo Revilla also visited the wake to extend his condolences to the family.

Lubigan was laid to rest at the St. Jude Memorial Park before sunset.

The vice mayor, along with his aide, was shot along Trece Martires-Indang Road in Cavite last July 7. Police said they were eyeing politics as the motive behind the killing.

Lubigan was the third local official to be killed that week. Before him, Tanauan Mayor Antonio Halili of Batangas and General Tinio Mayor Ferdinand Bote of Nueva Ecija were also shot dead.

Last July 11, the vice mayor of Sapa-Sapa town in Tawi-Tawi was also gunned down. Yesterday, a former vice mayor of Sto. Tomas in Batangas was rushed to the hospital after being shot. — report from Kevin Manalo, ABS-CBN News
