Gilas Pilipinas national team coach Chot Reyes acknowledged he was surprised that Australia lost to Japan in their 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifying game on Friday night.

The higher-ranked Australians, undefeated in 4 games heading to Chiba city, were expected to cruise past Japan, but the hosts got a boost from their new additions to stun the Boomers 79-78.

“We found out towards the middle of the fourth quarter that Australia did lose and we knew that Japan is a much stronger team now with the lineup that they have, naturalized players like (Nick) Fazekas,” Reyes said after the Philippines' 93-71 rout of Chinese-Taipei also Friday night.

“But I must admit it was a surprise.”

The Philippines plays Australia with first place at stake in Group B on Monday at Philippine Arena in Bulacan. Both teams have identical 4-1 records.

“I can't say how optimistic I am (about the coming match) because we didn't think of Australia at all coming to this ball game,” said Reyes.

“Before tonight our sole focus was Chinese Taipei and so now after we have some dinner and get back to the hotel we're gonna start thinking about Australia.”

Australia is ranked No. 10 in the world, while the Philippines and Japan are ranked 30th and 48th, respectively.

Naturalized Japanese player Nicholas Fazekas and US-raised Sendai-born forward Rui Hachimura combined for 49 points in their debuts for the Akatsuki Five in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers at Chiba Port Arena.

Hachimura's dunk with 12 seconds to go proved to be the game-winner, giving Japan a 79-74 lead and leaving Australia with not enough time to overturn the deficit.

The Boomers welcomed NBA players Thon Maker and Matthew Dellavedova, but their additions couldn't put the visitors over the top.

Maker tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Milwaukee Bucks teammate Dellavedova struggled with 4 points on top of 8 assists.
