MANILA, Philippines – Former Ateneo star Marck Espejo is determined to stay in tip-top shape ahead of his stint with the Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler volleyball club in Japan’s V1 League.

Fresh off a campaign with Cignal HD in the Premier Volleyball League, Espejo will still have over a month to train in the Philippines before he flies to Japan in late August.

“Wala na ngang Cignal training so siguro sasabay na ako sa men's team sa volleyball,” said Espejo after scoring 41 points in a losing effort for the HD Spikers against Air Force in the PVL men’s division finals.

“Siguro pagdating ko na lang siguro doon, doon ko kailangang mag-push pa. Dito 'yung condition ko muna ang kailangan kong bantayan,” he added.

Espejo, who was named Most Valuable Player of the PVL men’s division last week, explained that he needs to stay in top shape to keep up with the demands of his new club.

The five-time UAAP MVP is not expected to be a featured scorer for the Japanese club, but they will need him to be a solid receiver and floor defender.

“Kailangan ko i-improve 'yung service receive. Kasi sa Japan nga, parang 'yung service nila malakas, and consistent, tapos lahat jump serve,” he noted. “And receive nga ang kailangan nila. Sabi rin nila sa akin na kailangan mag-focus sa receive, kasi receive daw ang kailangan ng lahat ng team.”

He further pointed out that some of the other imports who will play in the V1 League are Olympic-caliber athletes.

“Kilala talaga ang mga imports, mga European. (Kaya) kailangan ko muna bantayan ‘yung kundisyon ko,” he said.

“Mas kailangan ko muna bantayan ang condition ko dito, para ready na ako doon,” Espejo stressed.

Espejo, who won three UAAP championships with Ateneo, formally signed with Oita Miyoshi in May after concluding his historic collegiate career.

He is the first Filipino volleyball player to see action in Japan’s top league.
