bin picking – Bangko Sentral seeks NBI help vs fake bills on social media
MANILA – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said Friday it sought help from the National Bureau of Investigation to identify those who had been "maliciously" posting defaced and fictitious bills on social media.
The NBI was also asked to look into those spreading "fake news" through manipulated images whether they are used to "deceive the public or generate entertainment," the BSP said.
The BSP said it had the sole power under law to issue Philippine currency.
The regulator urged the public to be cautious when sharing unofficial information regarding currencies on social media.
A Facebook post about a fake P10,000 bill went viral last June.
