MANILA – The support of Filipinos is essential for the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) to recover ill-gotten wealth and work on its pending cases.

Former Commission on Human Rights chief Etta Rosales said it is not enough for people to wait for the legal system to work on the recovery of alleged ill-gotten wealth.

"If you're just going to leave it to the legal system, you're not going to get much out of that. There's no hope," she said.

"If these three branches of government are practically controlled by one man, there's still another pillar that we can rely on. That's the Filipino people," Rosales added.

She, however, clarified it is important for the people to be aware of the details of the cases handled by the PCGG.

"But a people that is informed. A people that is empowered, and a people that is committed to move. That is what is necessary," Rosales said.

"Imulat natin ang taong-bayan, show them what these cases are, give them a history of what it's all about," she added.

Last week, the Supreme Court affirmed the dismissal of a civil suit seeking the recovery of billions of pesos allegedly plundered by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, his wife Imelda Marcos and their alleged cronies.
