MANILA – President Duterte’s economic managers will conduct their own briefings prior to the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) to allow the chief executive to deliver his message to the Filipino people “straight from the heart,” the Palace said Thursday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the pre-SONA briefings will give the President, who is known for not using his prepared speeches, “more latitude” to say whatever he wants.

“There is still a speech writer. They want it to be a message straight from the heart of President, not hindered by the need to report on the different achievements.

The annual speech traditionally features an enumeration of an incumbent's achievements, but the tough-talking Filipino leader had went off-script in his first two reports to the nation and attacked some of his critics.

Roque said the pre-SONA briefings will be a venue for the government’s economic team and other clusters of the Cabinet to report on their different achievements in the second year of the Duterte administration.

The President will deliver his third SONA on July 23.
