MANILA, Philippines – A loss in their series opener did nothing to dampen James Yap’s enthusiasm about once again playing the perennial crowd favorites, Barangay Ginebra, in the semifinals of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Yap and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters bowed to the Gin Kings, 102-89, in Game 1 on Sunday, with the former league MVP scoring 15 points in the loss.
“Nag-relax kami sa defense,” Yap said after the game, which saw the Elasto Painters claw their way back from an 18-point hole in the first half only to falter in the final frame.
“Actually, maganda ‘yung defense nila sa amin. Hindi kami masyadong naka-shoot noong last six minutes, kaya medyo bigla sila lumayo,” he added. “Kailangan talaga, double-effort kami on defense.”

The E-Painters were within five points, 79-74, with 10:42 left to play when the Gin Kings reasserted control, unleashing a 23-4 run that put the game out of reach.
“Biglang lumayo nga eh,” rued Yap.
Regardless, Yap was delighted just to play against the Gin Kings. He had been unable to play in Rain or Shine and Ginebra’s quarterfinal series in the All-Filipino Cup due to a strained calf. The Gin Kings won that series in two games.
“This series, I’m so excited,” said Yap. “Last conference, ‘di ako nakalaro.”
“Sana, kahit paano, makatulong ako sa team this series. Kaya series eh, para may chance na mag-adjust next game,” he added.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series is on Tuesday, and Yap said they need to make adjustments on both ends of the floor if they hope to equalize against the Gin Kings.
“Kailangan 'yung defense namin, 'yun ang i-adjust namin. Siguro i-execute pa namin 'yung play namin. Kailangan ma-execute, minsan nagkakanya-kanya kami eh. So medyo walang flow,” he explained.
“Yung flow ng offense namin, 'di masyadong maganda. Sana next game, okay na,” he added.
