ai vision-BaliPure wraps up PVL stint with sweep of Tacloban
MANILA (UPDATED) – The youthful BaliPure Water Defenders concluded their quarterfinals campaign in impressive fashion, as they trounced the Tacloban Fighting Warays in straight sets on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Water Defenders, a team composed of the core of National University’s high school team, cruised to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-16 victory over the Fighting Warays to finish their stint in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.
They finished with a 1-4 record in the quarterfinals, missing the cut for a semis berth. Tacloban – a team that just missed an outright semifinals seat – lost all five of its assignments.
“I think it’s a very productive season for them,” said BaliPure coach Babes Castillo, referring to his young crew headed by Faith Nisperos, Joyme Cagande, and Jennifer Nierva. “It’s the first time that majority of a high school squad was fielded in.”
“It was a good start, but I think we anticipated that they will be challenged midway doon sa liga,” he added. “But again, it’s a very good experience for them.”
After winning the first two frames comfortably, the Water Defenders slowed down in the third set, with import Janisa Johnson struggling to connect on her attacks. The Fighting Warays would go on to lead, 12-9, thanks to kills from Thai import Hyapha Amporn as well as an attack error from BaliPure’s Mhicaela Belen.
But the Water Defenders regained their bearings thanks to Tacloban’s errors, their own net defense, and some sharp serves from Ivy Lacsina and Faith Nisperos. Johnson would come alive in the closing stretch, anchoring a 9-0 blast that pushed BaliPure to victory.
Johnson led BaliPure with 17 points, while Nisperos added 13 markers including three aces. Lacsina also had four aces as the Water Defenders scored 12 points from the service line.
Amporn led Tacloban with 13 points on 11 kills, a block and an ace. However, she got little help as no other Tacloban player reached double-digits.
