The head of the Metro Manila police on Tuesday said it has not cast aside its campaign against motorcycle-riding criminals amid its crackdown on "tambays" or those loitering in the streets after dark.
Policemen have been instructed to mount intelligence operations against "riding-in-tandem" lawbreakers. They are also expecting the release of guidelines against motorcycle-riding criminals, said National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar.
The NCRPO, he said, is also open to a suggestion to sack commanders over poor performance in the drive against riding-in-tandem.
"Talagang ito'y aming responsibilidad, hindi naman po tinatalikuran at kami po ay pinauunlakan namin iyung inyong mga suggestion upang aming mapaganda pa iyung trabaho namin," Eleazar told radio DZMM.
(That is our responsibility, we are not turning our backs on it and we are accepting suggestions to improve our work.)
President Rodrigo Duterte on June 13 ordered law enforcers to be strict against loiterers. Some 8,000 people have since been apprehended or accosted in Metro Manila.
Local laws in some areas allow those apprehended to pay a fine or get a warning. In other areas, meanwhile, those who violate local ordinance on loitering are charged before the city prosecutor and are detained until they post bail, said Eleazar.
Some 100 people arrested for loitering remained in detention facilities as of Tuesday morning, he said.
