ROME, July 2 (Xinhua) — The unemployment rate in Italy decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 10.7 percent in May over the previous month, the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) said on Monday.
The figure marked the lowest unemployment level since mid-2012, the statistical agency specified in its report.
Italy’s youth jobless rate among people aged 15 to 24 was 31.9 percent in May, showing a monthly decrease of 1.0 percentage points.
In terms of numbers, 2.79 million people were jobless in May, down by some 2.9 percent over April.
Employment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 58.8 percent on the monthly basis, while inactivity rate remained steady at 34.0 percent, according to ISTAT.
ISTAT also estimated “a robust growth of people employed in the period March to May” that was equal to 212,000 more jobs over the previous period (up 0.9 percent).
Finally, employment grew by 2.0 percent in May compared to the same month of 2017, concerning both men and women.
Such growth on an annual basis was mainly due to an increase in the number of temporary contracts, while “permanent contracts remained substantially stable, and independent workers grew slightly,” ISTAT stated.
The average unemployment in May was 7.0 percent in the European Union (EU) and 8.4 percent in the eurozone, according to EU statistics agency Eurostat.
